Initially named “Bloomingview,” it was later renamed after the Huguenots, a group of French Protestants led by Daniel Perrin who settled in the area in the late 17th and early 18th-centuries to escape religious persecution. The name “Park” was eventually dropped, but it remains in the name of the Huguenot Park branch of the New York Public Library, which opened nearby in 1985.
